Well it's truly upon us the close season and no matter how many i've been through it doesn't get any better. Ok Wimbledon, The Open and yes i am a cricket fan so can cope with the Engrrland test matches but it's not the same...no build up no anticipation no pmt (eh pre match tension that is!!) and just what do you do on a Saturday morning (no soccer am!). That does it I'm commin' out of the closet....I AM A FOOTIE JUNKIE AND I NEED HELP!
My allegiance is now with Pollok FC (we've dropped the Juniors bit) Thirds reserves in a way and boy do you miss...the smell of cut grass, the greasy pies, the 'napalm' Bovril, the icy blast blowing through the shed (covered enclosure to you seniors), standing on the slopes, sharing the joy and sorrow with a complete stranger, the extreme highs the desperate lows...yeah a bit like being at Cathkin Park after all...GIMME A FIX!
Did watch the Confederation Cup and as the missus is half Greek had a vested interest in it too.Son and heir (who is fanatical Greek/Scotland fan) suggested the two of us go to the 'Konaki' in Sauchiehall St on the Sunday afternoon to catch the match and enjoy some trad scoff where "an early evening menu can be had for £7.50 per head" great! Anyway, £55 later and a humping by Japan the day certainly did not go to plan...and i thought Scotland were poor!
I know what you mean bigeye, it's the doldrums right enough! Even though here in the states the season is in full swing I just can't get interested in the NY Metrostars or the LA Galaxy! it's just not the same. The skill level is very high,(the new FIFA rankings put USA in 6th place, Scotland in 85th,But what do THEY know). The thing is that I watch mostly EPL games but my heart is with Scotland.I just wish more effort was put in to developing young Scottish players and not importing players who can't make it in their own countries, but I suppose these are the economic realities. >>>> putting the soapbox away<<<
I hope everone enjoys the upcoming season and begin posting on the site! it's LONELY in here
Two weeks in Crete passed too quickly for my liking:much stifado, mousaka, cleftico, souvlakis, oozo and zorbas beer now 4lb excess blubber to be removed but a fine time had by all.
Football is now back on the menu and managed to catch a Pollok friendly at Yoker (3-1 win) and today it's off to Tayport for the 'Super Cup' semi bit of a hike but hey this is what Saturdays are all about.
PTL how are the Jags looking this season noticed they had a creditable draw against Sheff Wed you must fancy their chances for promotion this season. Aim to catch a Thirds match at some time during the year sincerely hope they have as good a season as last.
Panda there must be some 'Junior' sides in the States you could watch how about: Arlington Talbot, Lauderdale Rose, Florida Violet eh perhaps not....
I know exactly what you mean Bigeye. Cant wait for the season to start.
A good win for Pollok the other day by all acoounts, the Jags drew with Sheffield Wednesday but they have been beaten by Highland League teams Deveronvale and Buckie Thistle, as well as Brechin City, and on saturday they were beaten by Hamilton Accies. It seems the Jags still have a lot of work to do and the second division will not be easy not with big spending Gretna and a very good Morton side. Still I'll be supporting them like I always am and hopefully they will be in with a shout for promotion, quite a few new palyers this season who I think will be an improvement on a number who were a disgrace to the proud history of Partick Thistle last season.
Also I never thought Id be able to ever say this with the sad demise of the club in 1967 but I am really looking forward to watching a team with the legendary Third Lanark name next year and hoepfully the club can go from strength to strength
