Hello mate,

Welcome to the Thirds forum.  There are a couple of great books out there about Third Lanark with plenty of superb photos about Cathkin ther are written by Bob Laird and you can also buy them in Hampden Park where there are some fantastic books not just on Thirds but on most Scottish clubs. They are in most bookshops in Glasgow ie Borders, Waterstones, WH Smiths.

Also some of the earlier threads started on this site earleir on in the year contain some photos of Cathkin.  Even jsut general searches on the Internet as well mate, in the history of different clubs it will no doubt have features of the respective club playinf Thirds.

Agree entirely with your comments on Cathkin, it will be an absolute disgrace if anyone tried to destroy Cathkin, like Hiddelston did in the sixties.  Im sure if it was ever tried thouhg there would be enough petitions and protests launched to stop this.  I'd certainly be one of the first to sign any petition.

Cheers for that mate I fell in love with Cathkin Park as soon as I saw it. My kids were disapointed they never brought a ball with them so they could have a kickabout. (I was as well) In this day and age all the clubs have forgotton about there heritage and knock down grounds without even thinking about it. Aston Villa being a prime example when they destroyed the Trinity Rd stand. Thank God Rangers kept Archibald Leitchs Main Stand. Cathkin Park should be a listed structure.

I couldnt agree more!  Cathkin Park should be kept listed.  Hopefully with the new Thirds team up and running then parts of Cathkin can be further refurbished and the terracing maintained!  Less likelihood of developers trying to get their greedy mitts on it!

I feel the same way about Firhill, am a tad disappointed that the final section of terracing is likely to be converted to a new stand as we (the Jags) dont really need another stand there!  Still better to have Firhill, Ibrox and Cathkin Park in any form than not at all!

I am fortunate to stay just over 5 mins walk from Cathkin.  I too think its a magical piece of Scottish football history!  Even today there is such a fantastic wee atmosphere about it, you just know there is so much history and great crowds and games were there!  Think its about time the Council got round to making it a listed structure!

Yeah there's still an atmosphere about the place and enough left of the old ground ie perimeter wall round the track, terrcing steps (though not the metal crush barriers which are a 'cooncil' addition) and the original layout of the playing surface to make you want to go back.

Cathkin was a fair sized ground in its day and could comfortably hold 30,000 and having been in most senior stadia (around that time) it was also one of the biggest. There's a picture in Bob Laird's book (P111 Alan Gilzean scoring the winner for Dundee) of a game i vividly remember and there was a crowd of 25,000 at the match and if you look at the picture closely you'll see by the terraces what i mean.Dundee were **** hot in those days and carried a big travelling support they had won the league in season 61/62 and reached the semi of the European Cup and most of that side were still playing for them.

Fingers crossed for Cathkin Park.
