To this day i have never supported another team since Third Lanark. I was a ballboy there for a few months when they were 3rd top in the league, if i remember correctly. I do remember being behind the goal at the cottge end, when Paddy Crerrand took a shot and i put my hand up to stop the ball and my hand stung for ages due to his strong strike. Maybe one further claim for Third Lanark is that i probably was the only ever Jewish ball boy in the Scottish league! Tried to get them to change to Sunday playing, but they wouldn't have it!!!!!!!! The dream i have is that when i win double Euro rollover, i would start Third Lanark again and build it up again. Romantic dream i know. Funnily enough a friend down here in London called Ian Brown, was player for Partick Thistle in those days. I have the Bert Bells book about Third Lanark and will treasure it always. Good luck to other supporters, Regards Philip
Thanks and will definately keep that in mind. I vividly remember the shed where Bovril and pies were sold and one of my friends saying he was going to go to Wembley to see England play Scotland. We asked him how he was going to get there. His reply was "By Tram" The age of innocents long gone!! Any ideas where i can buy a couple of shirts?? Would be really grateful.
Third Lanark retro tops on the market are currently in 2 styles only from the 1940s-60s period and a few places do them still.
TOFFS are a reputable site which does 2 versions of the red top although they are a bit pricey at £35 although there is an option to have a number stitched on:
Occasionally the WHITE 3rds shirt with red piping is on Ebay (a very nice shirt I have myself!) but doesn't seem to be on today though.
PartickThistleLad (another member) might have a few ideas of other places to get one though and he's pretty regularly on the site so might have a few ideas for you.
Dear Topcat, Thanks for your info, just bought the cheaper one of off Ebay. Believe it or not i sell a lot of things on Ebay, but never thought to look for a Third Lanark shirt. I take it the new Thirds are playing at the old ground? What league are they in, so i can keep track of them. I saw they have a web site but where do you join it, as can't seem to see a place to do this. Thanks once again Regards Philip
The amateur side currently ply their trade in the Greater Glasgow Premier AFLDivision 3 and are only allowed to play on Cathkin Parkby the Glasgow City Council council lettings department once per fortnight.
The GGPAFL matches usually kick off on Saturday afternoons around 2.30 pm in summer/spring with kick-offs moving back to 2 pm in autumn/winter due to poor light and no floodlights.
This season though, the GGP AFL have taken in a few new teams. Rather than making a new Division 4 they have taken the unusual step of splitting the Division 3 teams into 2 sections of Division 3A and Division 3B.
The 3rds kick off their League Cup campaign (before the league proper starts up) on August 15th and the details of the LCup Group 6 are here: http://www.greaterglasgow.co.uk/lc0910.htm although if the current website is updated will have details of where the lads will be playing and where.
Hi Philip, I think you should know that, apart from the Amateur team, there is a group of supporters, new and old, and some ex players, who are currently building towards putting together a reformulated Third Lanark AC to play in the Junior Leagues. This is a long term project and has already involved discussions with politicians and councillors. It will involve the re - developement of Cathkin Park amongst other things. A feasability study is taking place as I write. There might be the possibility of exiled supporters contributing financially to the club through a Supporters Trust or some other such body in the future, so keep checking this wesbsite for any news or developments. It is, however, a long term project which will probably take a couple of years to put into place ( eg we need to source funding, agree on leasing arrangements etc. ), but I hope you will keep a lookout for any news on this project. If it is to work, we will certainly need the help of the Third Lanark diaspora in the future! Thanks for your interest. Neil McCallum
