I would be interested to know what the Thirds kit was in 1959 Final as i don't remember seeing it featuring in any pics (perhaps the Blackpool floodlight game?) of league matches.
From what I have seen of photos, it was the same scarlet shirt. Incidentally was this game shown live at the time? Would presume there must be footage of it somewhere?
Dunno it looks as if it could have been gold (wolves style) and also Hearts have a change too.Seems a bit odd right enough for both teams to change but would be nice to have it confirmed.I would be surprised if the game was live but as you say there will be footage (black and white probably) but i guess until Bob Crampsey gets his own TV programme we'll never know!!!
I was at the game with my dad and my three brothers. Thirds did, in fact, wear the "Wolves" strip, i.e. old gold shirts and black shorts. Hearts wore white shirts with maroon candy stripes. It was a huge occasion for me, even if it did have a disappointing end.
The only occasion I can remember coming close was the final game of the season (72??) when we played Hibs and acchieved 100 goals in a season. Was that ever equalled by any other teams, before the 10 team (non) league)?
I know it's not unusual nowadays for both teams to change to their 2nd kit (probably more for commercial reasons) but i have to say i find it strange that Thirds opted for such a diverse alternative strip. I would be interested to know why the decision was taken, perhaps the kit was donated or does it go deeper than that. If i had been a Thirds fan at the time i would have been rather miffed at not seeing the famous 'red' at Hampden or at least the recognisable 'white' away kit.
According to this report, it seems that Thirds also wore the gold and black kit in the 1959 Semi-Final against Arbroath - another occasion when both teams appear to have worn a change strip.
Note that the player in the foreground of the photo accompanying the report is the Arbroath centre-half Fraser - I found it confusing until I read the caption!
Quite a poignant photo of Cathkin boy does that bring back sad memories!
Interesting report on the semi and really amazing they wore that kit too so i guess there was a chance it had a few 'airings' before the final. It must also have been an occasion for Arbroath to get that far in the Cup probably more so than Thirds and yet again both played in change strips.
