Was asked on a bluenose site where the HiHi name came from! Seem to recall it was a war-cry of the regiment but not sure. Want to educate the Gers fans about the great Thirds so any info would be appreciated!
The origins of the nickname Hi Hi Hi have been many & varied. In fact the cry came about rather innocently. Apparantly during a league match at old Cathkin Park, in the late 1890's a Thirds' defender ,in clearing his lines , belted the ball higher than had been witnessed before in that game. A large group of fans, instantly yelled Hi Hi Hi, and from that time it became known as a unique nickname for the club.
Other understandabvle nicknames were the " Redcoats & the Warriors " clearly because of the military association.
In the mid 1950,s Journalist- Jack House of Glasgow Evening Citizen fame, wrote a piece on this subject in his Saturday Column. Hope this is of interest.
Thanks Bert! Not quite so impressive as a warcry but still interesting! Will pass it on. BTW there is a great action photo on that site of the Rangersv Thirds game at Ibrox in the 100 goal season (4-3 for Gers). It features wee Jocky Robertson making a save from Brand. If I can master this copyand paste thing Iwill try to get it for this forum!
