Joe McInnes

My favourite player, as a boy, was Wee Joe McInnes.  What a player he was!  If he'd played with one of the old firm, I'm sure jinkin' Joe would have been capped for Scotland.  I've heard the old-timers talk about Stanley Matthews and the way he had such control over a ball that it was as if it was tied to his boots by a piece of string.  I believe wee Joe was just as good and any right back in the 1st division in the late 50s and early 60s would agree.  Joe just terrorised them with his mesmerising runs down the left wing.

Hi Hi Hi, When researching for the History of Third Lanark AC, Joe McInness was only one of 65 former played I visited. Did you know that Joe signed from Accrington Stanley, on Saturday 2nd August, 1956 at 12 noon and only three hours later cracked in 5 magnificent goals from the left wing berth, in the league cup opener against Stenhousemuir to create a new goalscoring debut record for a left winger - which in my opinion still stands to day. The Goodfellow, Hilly, Harley Gray & McInness front five of the early sixties, netted 88 of the 100 league goals scored in season 1960/61, and Joe more than played his part. He was a wing wizard, with a character to match and I agree that if he had played in Blue or Green, he would have been a Scotland regular - Jimmy Mason paid the same penalty in this regard.

I've just been checking Joe McInnes on Greger Lindberg's very impressive site dedicated exclusively to the "old" (1891-1962) Accrington Stanley FC at

http://hem.passagen.se/accringtonstanley/

It appears that McInnes joined Accrington in the 1955-56 season from Partick Thistle FC, and made a total of 14 Football League appearances for the Lancashire club, scoring 2 goals. Note that Accrington's manager at that time, Walter Galbraith, seems to have had a strong preference for recruiting players from Scotland: the previous season, only three members of the regular team were English - the rest were all Scots.

My main memory of Joe was the number of times he was sent off for mouthing off at the referee! I  was almost in tears at one game as a wee boy when he was dismissed.I believe it was a Scottish Cup game at Cathkin against Hibs around 1960(2-1 for the good guys !-big crowd that day ,about 26000 I think).Changed days now with players swearing at the refs all the time with not even a warning.

Also I remember that Joe was an avid Celtic fan and I recall him scoring against them (he couldn't miss as it was from about a foot out ).He was obviously uncomfortable about the situation as he returned for the kick-off with his head down! No doubt his Celtic mates would have given him a hard time that night!

I remember Joe McInnes as a great dribbler of the ball, although i think, sometimes he forgot there were another 4 forwards. Also if memory serves correct, don't know where he got the energy. Didn't he have 11 children!!
I think that our centre half, George Mccallum would have been one of the Greatest center halfs in Britain, if he didn't get an injured knee which stopped his career, if i remember correctly.
