Yes it's Sunday morning it's dull, grey and yup it's raining and i'm nursing a slightly nippy heid just another Sunday.
Anyway trawling the net in effort to uncover anything relating to dear old Thirds when i came across this wee gem www.upyarkilt.com/ForTheRecord.htm
It tells of a match between Thirds and Motherwell in 1910 when goalkeepers were allowed to handle the ball anywhere on the pitch and both teams goaltenders used the rule to the extreme and both managed to score a goal (in fact allegedly the only time both keepers have scored in the same game ).Now, this conjures up some wonderful images of how they actually scored their goals:- Thirds Keeper leaves his own goalmouth...runs up the park with the ball in his hands...dodging despairing lunges form the opposing team (is this rugby or what)...gets into the opposition box...drops the ball at his feet...and blasts the ball into the net:
Third Lanark 1 Motherwell 0
or perhaps:-corner on the right for Motherwell...over it comes...up jumps the 'well keeper...grabs the ball with both hands...and flings the ball into the net:
Third Lanark 1 Motherwell 1
The potential is there for a 20-20 scoreline but somehow both keepers decide enough is enough moment of glory enjoyed.
It was apparently this match which brought about the change in the laws restricting goal keepers to only being able to handle the ball in their own box..great stuff
Another snippet stated that when Thirds won the league in 1905 it wasn't until 1932 that a team other than one of the 'old firm' won the league...nice to see times have changed
