England v Scotland 1967

The News of the World were giving away a free dvd of the England v Scotland 1967 game a few weeks ago and i decided to air it last night (not much footy on the box these days anyway).Yes it was that classic 3-2 encounter whereby our gallant 11 led by Slim Jim demolished a gradually weakening England side. The game wasn't live on tv and i recall playing the 9 hole golf course at Kings Park with updates of the score being circulated round the course as we played .

We shouldn't have been surprised with the score or the performance because the team was made up of old firm players whose club sides were in the two major European Finals at that time (just in case you'd forgotten )....

I guess the most poignant aspect of that time is that the game was played on the Saturday before the 'curtain came down'... and there we were all blissfully unaware of what was round the corner .

Was there any Third Lanark players in that squad Bigeye?

I wonder if many Thirds players ever palyed in the World Cup? WOuld think there would be a few, not jsut Scottish, as some of the threads on this site have detailed many players of the HiHi from other countries

I am unaware of any Thirds players in a World Cup squad while still at Cathkin although there were probably some who could have played in it with other clubs, perhaps Bobby Evans,Sammy Baird,Dunky McKay and i suppose if you count Tommy Docherty's one off game for Thirds then yes he did play in the 54 finals.

I think 1954 was Scotlands first finals which would eliminate Jimmy Mason who would have been our main candidate for such an event if we had competed in 1950.

It would be interesting to find out certainly. Of course there was definitely one manager
in the world cup who had previously played for his beloved Third Lanark, the late great Ally Mcleod

HI,

I well remember even more poignantly leaving Boghead on friday evening 28/4/67, and saying to my constant Cathkin companion - " Dad "  - At least we know after tonight that the only way for Thirds is up.

I certainly did not mean "up the creek".  but sadly a couple of months later the famopus cry HI Hi  Hi was heard no more.

Has anyone heard even a whisper of  follow up  re  the "double Connolly/Connery  comments of  a few weeks ago.  Like all former Thirds' fans I still live in hope - but......

Keep writing and hoping.

Bert.
