Hi I'm from the Netherlands and I think Third Lanark was a great club with a great history. I have a question about the name Hi Hi? Where does it come from?
There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to this one but the popular belief is that at some time in the clubs past they played a long ball game which necessitated the ball being humped, blootered or skelped with great force up the park resulting in the ball going high high up in the air. It's probably as feasible an explanation as there is.
In the early fifties the late Glasgow Evening Citizen Columnist provided the answer to this query.- from research traced to an early Scottish Football document.
In a match between Thirds & Hearts in the late 1890's a Thirds defender belted the ball higher than had ever been seen by the fans. As a consequence a large group screamed Hi Hi Hi and the unique nickname was born. In addition Thirds carried another two nicknames, The Redcoats, and The Warriors, both associated with their Military origins.
As you will read in my Book STILL SEEING RED, I accepted completely this explanation
