Bob Crampsey

RIP Bob.
Sad news this, although a Queens Park fan, he as much as anyone helped keep the great Third Lanark name alive over the last 40 years or so.

A real gentleman

Yep Matt, a true broadcasting legend. I'm old enough to remember the old Scotsport days of the still legendary Arthur Montford, Alex Cameron and Mr Bob Crampsey reporting from all the great Scottish footballing grounds armed only with massive outside broadcast microphones, great charm and wit, and an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things football. Great days watching, as a wee kid, these lads enchant me with their stories, opinions and lucid, descriptive commentaries on games all conveyed to me through the medium of a wee Bush black and white telly. His use of the most erudite language, precisely spoken, with every adjective used adding another layer to his cutting, sometimes ironic metaphors, would seem at first glance incongruous to the everyday world of football we know and love, yet, in Bob's hands, resonances and emotions were wrenched out that would give a game an epic feel while still retaining that Scottish mellifluous earthiness for which Bob was widely known and admired.
A great tribute, by the way, on BBC Sportsound's Saturday radio programme to Bob which, I think, showed the great humanity of the man, describing his love of going to Queens and Thirds games on alternate Saturdays, his command of the French language, his vast knowledge on all subjects under the sun, his love of playing the piano as a way of relaxing from the stressful world of sports journalism and, last but not least, how he would reply to all letters and even invite the amazed senders to 'drop in if you ever in the neighbourhood for a cup of tea and a chat'!! Amazing. A great man.
