Does anyone have any further information about the former Third Lanark goalkeeper Jim “Jock” Bayne (you can view a photograph of him HERE), who was transferred to Boston United (the club I support) in or around March 1946? It appears that he had also played for Brentford at some earlier stage of his career.
I’m rather curious to know how he came to sign for Boston, who at that time were a part-time outfit from a fairly remote country town, playing in the old Midland League. Did Bayne have any Armed Services connections with the Lincolnshire area, I wonder? Boston’s manager at that time was the former Sheffield United and England winger Freddy Tunstall, so it doesn’t seem to have been a case of a Scottish manager of an English club turning to Scotland to recruit players, as can sometimes happen (and perhaps rather more so in those days).
Prior to his transfer (which would have been on a “free”), did Bayne appear in Third Lanark’s first team at all? – and if so, did he join the club pre-or post-War, and how many appearances did he make for the HiHi?
Bayne made his debut for Boston United in a Midland League game against Doncaster Rovers Reserves (away) on 2nd March 1946, and went on to become an automatic choice on the team sheet for the next four seasons. His last recorded game for Boston was in a Lincolnshire Senior Cup match against Grantham on 1st May 1950 – although it is quite possible that he would have been in the line-up for the Midland League game against Goole Town five days later (there are no details of the exact team for the latter match). After that, it seems probable that he left the club, as he made no appearances at all for Boston during 1950/51 or thereafter.
What became of him then, I wonder? Did he continue his playing career elsewhere? Did he move back to Scotland? Did he decide to remain in Lincolnshire? Given that he was such a regular figure in the Pilgrims’ side of the late 1940s, it would be extremely interesting to learn a bit more about this player.
According to my records on Thirds, there was a Bayne who kept goal against Hibernian on 25th January 1941 (3-2 to Thirds). Bayne only played as regular goalkeeper McAffery was playing in goal for an SFA Select side against an Army XI (1-0 to SFA Select). This was of course wartime football, deemed unofficial. There was no Bayne in pre-war Thirds line-ups.
I am planning to publish a statistical record of Third Lanark 1872-1967, with all results, scorers and line-ups. Should be complete early 2006! This will probably be a short print run, so anyone interested in buying a copy can contact me on the following e-mail address:
Since making my earlier post I've been told that Jim Bayne, now in his nineties, is still sprightly, hale and hearty, and that he still lives in Boston.
Just found this forum on a long slow afternoon at work.... Jim 'Jock' Bayne was my Grandfather and as is reported passed away earlier this year aged 92. I don't know the whole chronology, but he did retire from football after playing for Boston United. He ran a pub in Spalding and then the Pincushion in Boston until the late 60's. He then worked for the Tax Office in Boston until his retirement. He always continued his love of football and we spent many hours at games and on his legendary five mile walks around Boston. He continued to walk five miles a day into his 90's and passed away after having a stroke in March 2009. We visited Glasgow together in 1998 and walked around Cathkin Park and were let into Ibrox onto the pitchside after Jim convinced the security guard to let us in. He was a great man, a great friend and the only Grandfather amongst all my friends who could outplay teenage boys at football....
If anyone has any pictures of Jim playing for the Thirds I would love to see them. best wishes
