Match Report: Third Lanark AC v Crosslands AFC

Match Report: Third Lanark AC 2 (1) Crosslands 3 (2)        Att. 30

On a brisk, overcast afternoon at a brown and yellow leaf strewn Cathkin Park, a colourful autumnal scene, augmented by sundry red and white 'HiHi' balloons floating around the hallowed terracings, greeted the players of Third lanark AC and Crosslands as they took to the field. However, despite a well - taken brace by Thirds No4 Devaney and an excellent goalkeeping display by 'HiHi' shot stopper Coyle, Thirds were narrowly defeated 2-3 by a dogged, workmanlike, yet sometimes skilful Crosslands side.
The All Blues' dangerous No10 had a snapshot attempt in 19 minutes before 90 seconds later cutting deep into the left hand side of the Thirds box with pace and power. After astutely passing to a suspiciously offside No3, the defender easily slotted the ball home to put the away side one ahead. Cat like goalie Coyle, in the great tradition of Thirds' keepers, then made two gravity defying saves from the ever influential blues' No10, before Thirds replied in 38 minutes with a brilliantly controlled, 20 yard curling Devaney shot which flew in from the left hand side of the box with the trajectory of a Fyfes banana.
A minute before half - time a lack of concentration out wide led to a vicious cross from the right being fired in, allowing blues' No9 Gervaise to expertly control the skidding ball and, almost in the same movement, slide it under the body of the desparing Coyle. The half -time whisle soon blew leaving the confident Crossland team with a deserved, but hard - fought 1-2 lead.
Uplifted by the presence of unofficial Thirds mascot 'Syd the dug', the diminutive doggy resplendant in the famous scarlet and white colours, Thirds pressed hard at the start of the second half and were rewarded in 64 minutes when Devaney, showing some sublime dribbling skills, cut in from the left to fire home a short range strike, a counter which marked his brace and Thirds deserved second equaliser. However, the 'HiHi' joy was short lived as only 3 minutes later Gervaise grabbed his own couple by firing home through a ruck of players after another bout of suicidal Thirds defending. Despite some desperate last minute pressure from the 'HiHi', the blue clad away team ran out winners, although Thirds will feel a touch unlucky not to have secured a point at the end of the match.

PS Look out for new Thirds match programme at future home games with pictures, articles, features and match reports.

Thanks a lot Neil for an excellent report on this match.  It sounds as if the team are settling in well    A very progressive step too with the news of a Match Programme in the offing.

We must hope for a most welcome win to Launch the new edition. at the next home game.

Best wishes to everyone in the colours - Scarlet of course.

Bert.

Thanks Bert for you kind words. Certainly the Thirds team is settling in well with players starting to understand and get a feel for the great history of the club. In the recent home games the players have been a bit unlucky losing by the odd goal on a couple of occasions, but I'm sure with a bit of extra quality and an easing injury list Thirds will get the rewards their play deserves.
We've done a couple of mock programmes for the past 2 home games just to gauge reaction and people have liked what they saw, although we can never compete with the classic 'Hi Hi' prograammes of the 50s and 60s, obviously!. However, we hope we can put something together on a regular basis which signals our serious intent to help, promote and propogate the club and it's ambitions.
To anyone Thirds minded reading this, please try and get down to Cathkin and support the team as we try and bring together the Third Lanark family, indeed the 'Hi Hi' diaspora from the far flung corners of the world! Look out for flyers or posters in pubs and shops for info on the up - coming games and we'll look forward to seeing you. Remember, wear your colours with pride as even wee doggie Syd, now an iconic figure on the web seemingly, is decked out in scarf and tammy as he scampers up and down the touchline and terracing barking menacingly at opposition players!
Keep the faith. Up the 'Hi Hi'!

Well said Neil and Bert, as hopefully the more the new HiHi play the more we can start to establish a fanbase once again and welcome back the former fans as welcome new ones into the magic that surrounds Third Lanark.
